Philatelic Society of Kuching, Sarawak (PSKS) was
found in 1993 by Mr. Chan Kee Tex who was a philatelist expert in
Sarawak philately. The first meeting of the Kuching Stamp collectors
was on 8 November 1992 at 400, Pisang Road West, Kuching, which is the
registered Society's address till now. The Protem Committee was elected
then. Dr. Kang Tee Yong, who was also expert in Sarawak philately, was
elected as the President of the Protem Committee.
The registration of the Society was approved on 19 June 2003 and the
first meeting was held on 3 October 2003. The two main activities of
the Society were to hold stamp meeting( talking & discussing themes
of stamp collecting) & to conduct stamp auctions in order to
promote the stamp collecting in Kuching. There were 7 such stamp
meetings & 7 auctions held in 1994. Other than that, the Society
also assisted Pos Malaysia in contributing exhibits in its stamp
exhibition held in April. All
these served an important role in promoting the local philately
as can be seen from the number of collectors increased unexpectedly in
the year.
Unfortunately, it was soon found that there was not easy to hold too
many
auctions due to the lack of volunteer working members. So, the
number of auction was reduced to 3 in 1995!
The Society became dormant after the AGM 1996, It remained inactive
until December 1997, when a new committee led by Mr. Teo Thuan
Kong was elected. The Society headed in the initial direction & it
published a journal "The Kuching Philatelist" in August
1998, it is in A4 format with both English & Chinese articles. The
journal changed its name to "The Sarawak Philatelist" in the following
year.
The Society began to hold local Stamp Exhibitions from 1999
The following are the basic activities of the society and the number of
times they are held annually.
Auctions----1 to 2 times per year
Publication of journals---2 to 4 per year
Exhibitions---maximum1 time per year
The number that a basic activities conducted vary due to multiple
factors, we hope that the problem can be solved soon & the
frequency of activities can be fixed in near future.
